Volunteering in Asia

Volunteering in Asia can offer a vastly different experience than working on other continents. The variety of cultures from country to country means that it will be a perfect place to take in different cultures. For anyone wishing to discover the true side to Asia’s rich and diverse culture, volunteering will allow you to experience the traditions and customs first-hand.
The majority of volunteer organisations are looking for qualified and skilled professionals, but there are a few areas left open for anyone with a bit of experience in some areas.

The education sector is perhaps the most in-demand of all in Asia. Due to the caste systems and customs set in many of the underdeveloped areas, many members of society are deprived of an education. Volunteer organisations aim to provide an education for these people, where they would normally receive none. The percentage of children not participating in education in Asia is also extremely high. In Pakistan, for example, it is believed that 54% of children between the ages of 5 and 14 are not enrolled in any school.
As always, the less-developed countries will be seeking workers in the health sector, and with a rapid increase in the spread of HIV, many volunteers specialising in this area have travelled to Asia. Although the disease is not as widespread as it is in Africa, there is still a need for care and greater awareness in Asia.

In addition to the hands-on roles, there will be many opportunities for people specialising in other areas, such as management, administration and logistics.
