Volunteering in South America

For young travellers looking to take in the sights of South America, volunteering has become an increasingly attractive option. Not only does it give people the opportunity to help communities, but it is also a great way to immerse yourself in local culture and customs. There are a wide range of skills needed across many South American countries, but, as always, it is important that you choose the right one that will suit your abilities and personal requirements.

Although not as prevalent as in Africa or Asia, education still brings in many volunteers from developed countries, who are often placed within already-existing schools. As the level of education is poor in many areas, there is a constant shortage of teachers able to cater for younger generations.

However, as infrastructure and sanitation is so under developed in South America, the majority of volunteers usually come to assist in this area. Many of the charities and volunteer organisations work to create better water supplies and other environmentally-friendly systems in rural areas. It is believed that north and central South America has been one of the worst areas affected by drought, due to the rise in global temperatures.

However, much voluntary work is carried in large cities where younger members of the population are in greater danger of becoming involved with drugs and crime. In Bolivia, for example, 25% of the population are between 15 and 30, and, with a high unemployment rate, many young members of society are drawn into criminal activities. Art and sport initiatives have been created to bring communities closer together and greater focus is put on education.
