Wirehaired Pointing Griffon – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is also commonly known as the Korthals Griffon, especially in the United Kingdom. Their name is actually a translation of the original name that was used in their countries of origin, the Netherlands and France. There, they were called Griffon d’arrêt à poil dur Korthals. They were developed in France as a hunting and working dog. A man named Eduard Karel Korthals first starting developing the breed in 1873. While their ancestry dates to the Netherlands and they were developed in France, the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon has become a popular pet and hunting dog in other parts of Europe as well as the United States.

Wirehaired Pointing Griffons are hunting dogs, primarily. They are considered gun dogs because they are best at helping hunters who use guns during the hunt. As the name might suggest, the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon makes an excellent pointer. When the dog senses their prey, whether by sight, sound or smell, the dog will then point its body toward the source. They do this by straightening out their back and pointing their head toward where the animal currently resides. This is a cue to the hunter so they know where to shoot.
