Akbash Dog – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

The Akbash Dog originated in Turkey. The Turkish meaning for the name is “white head”. This breed was developed nearly three thousand years ago. When they were first domesticated, they were widely used as protection, or guardian, dogs. They would often protect and care for livestock.

Akbash Dogs are known for their white coat; in fact, it is very distinctive and sets them apart from other dogs. Their fur is thick and lush. They have long legs, are slender and lean and have fluffy curved tails. This breed can weigh up to 130 pounds (60 kg).

Although many people might refer to the Akbash Dog as a sheep dog, it is not. When utilized in a working capacity, the Akbash Dog will live coexist with the heard instead of charging them. It builds a loyalty bond with them and protects against predators or thieves. Therefore, it is often employed as a guardian for livestock.

The personality traits of the Akbash Dog are very useful attributes. They are by nature loyal, intelligent, courageous and independent. One of the reasons that they are not sheep herding dogs is due to their low energy. Their stamina allows them to protect when needed. However, the Akbash is more of a guardian dog, which means they are more likely to lie down and observe. They are a breed that is happiest when they have a job to do, so confined spaces are not really a good idea for the Akbash.
