Alano Español – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

The Alano Español originated in Spain. It is commonly referred to as a Spanish Bulldog or a Spanish Alano. This is a molosser type of breed, which is very large. It is widely known for its use in Spanish bullfights. However, bullfights were not the only jobs in which they were generally used. These dogs were utilized in guarding livestock, employed as “war dogs”, hunting large game and aiding in the capture of slaves.

The Alano Español has a distinct head, which is quite large. Males can weigh approximately 100 pounds (around 45 kg or slightly higher) and females are typically smaller. They have shorthaired coats, often with colourful brindle patterns. The brindle colours do vary. The fur may appear wrinkled in areas of the face and neck due to the thickness of the skin. The muzzle is short and the nose is broad.

The Alano Español is very sociable with animals including other dogs. It does not feel threatened by other canines and will work well with them. This particular breed needs to be well trained and be given a job to do in order to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle without complications.

It is primarily due to the Alano Español’s fearless temperament that they were able to successfully hunt hefty animals like wild boar and work in the bullrings. Besides being courageous, they are also strong, loyal, intelligent, protective and they have a commanding presence.
