American Cocker Spaniel – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

The American Cocker Spaniel is very different from its English relative and is in fact classified as a breed in its own right. The Cocker Spaniel originated in Spain, was taken to England and then taken to America. The American Cocker Spaniel has a number of distinguishing features that set it apart from its English relative.

The head is one of the main differences between the breeds. The English Cocker Spaniel has a more rectangular head whereas the American Cocker Spaniel has a well rounded head. The American Cocker Spaniel is also smaller and has a longer coat.

The American Cocker Spaniel is a medium-sized dog. Perhaps the most identifiable characteristic of this dog is its long-haired coat. The hair is soft and silky. The ears hang down and are covered in long, sometimes slightly wavy yet flat hair. The tail is commonly docked. The coats can come in a vast array of colours and patterns, but are commonly a light colour.

The temperament of the American Cocker Spaniel is very desirable for people who want a quiet house dog. The dog is considered to be outgoing and affectionate. It doesn’t do well in loud, harsh environments and does not respond well to rough training. They love to please their family. The dogs are ranked at position 20 in the Stanley Coren’s The Intelligence of Dogs, which makes them easy to train. They can be working dogs and they were once used to hunt, but today they are widely sought after as household pets.
