Borzoi – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

The Borzoi originated in Russia where it was once known as the Russian Wolfhound. This breed has long-standing roots and has been around for centuries. Originally, it was bred to hunt wolves, which is where the term wolfhound came into being. In order to save the breed from extinction they were taken to the United States, Britain and Canada. They are considered sight hounds, as they tend to rely on their vision more than their scent ability to track their prey.

The Borzois are large dogs that have long legs, and a rather unique structure. They are graceful no matter if they are running or standing still. Their fur coat is soft and silky, and is commonly long and flat with a light, wavy appearance. The tail is set low and is generally carried between the legs in a slightly bent fashion. There is no standard colour to this breed.

The Borzois do have some health problems and high risks of developing cancer. These dogs should be taken to the veterinarian for regular check ups. Their life expectancy is generally around seven to fourteen years.

The Borzois are friendly to other dogs, cats and domesticated animals. Some of these types of dogs can have a deep hunting instinct so it is wise for the owner to have the breed trained and socialized while it is young. Borzois do not respond well to harsh training so great care and gentleness should be exercised at all times.
