Briquet Griffon Vendeen – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

The Briquet Griffon Vendeen is a breed that originated in France. Much of the original breed was lost because of the various wars in the 20th century. It was not until 1946 that a Briquet like dog reappeared in Vendee. By the end of the 20th century, several top quality Briquet hunting packs could be found in France.

The Briquet is used frequently as a pack hunter. This is a medium sized dog as the word Briquet indicates. This canine was bred down in size from the Grand Griffon Vendeen. As they have dropped down to a medium size, the breed has become capable of greater agility, endurance and speed.

The build is very well proportioned. It is stocky and muscular with a tail that tapers toward the end and never curls over the back. The double fur coat is long with the outer layer being harsh and bushy while the under coat is thick and dense. The colours are generally combinations of white and orange, white and black, black and tan or black and fawn. Tri-coloured coats are also seen in this breed.

This is one breed that lives to hunt and should only be used as such. The Briquet Griffon Vendeen has a deep passion and enthusiasm for the thrill of hunting. This dog needs plenty of exercise and is not typically kept as a pet. This is primarily because they can be wilful.

Always looking for the fun of getting outdoors, this breed should not be kept inside. They must have frequent exercise and it must be a daily routine. When hunting they will not tire easily and their excitability is noticeable.
