The Canadian Pointer is a gun dog type of breed. Despite its name, they did not originate in Canada but rather the north-eastern region of the Untied States. This is a working canine that is primarily used for hunting. Another common name for this dog is the Adirondak Pointing Dog.
This medium-size dog has well-balanced and defined muscles. Their gait is a little different than that of the English pointer, which is one way to tell the specific breed from the rest in the pointer category. The Canadian Pointer is also a little shorter then the English pointers as well.
One of the distinctive visual characteristics of the Canadian Pointer is the coat. The hair length is short. The coat is coarse and very thick. Usually, the coat colours are in combinations of black and white, dark brown and white, and light brown and white.
The Canadian Pointer is not as agile as many of the other breeds of gun dog.
This factor may seem like a draw back, but they do make up for it in intelligence and ability to adapt and overcome the trickiest of circumstances or situation. This is a skill that outweighs any negative aspect.
The temperament and personality of the Canadian Pointer is a desirable quality. They are a very tame breed that that can be gentle, loving, and kind. Most working dogs need to be outside and always doing a task. However, this is not true for the Canadian Pointer. They are content in the house and as a part of the family unit.
