Cocker Spaniel – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

The Cocker Spaniel comes in two distinct types: the American Cocker Spaniel and the English Cocker Spaniel which, as the names suggest, originated in the United States and in England respectively. The Cocker Spaniel is a hunting dog and they are the smallest spaniels.

Despite being small spaniels they are commonly referred to as medium-sized dogs. This breed is compact and the hind quarters are more muscular than the front. The main characteristics that both types of Cocker Spaniel share are the long ears that hang down and the long hair of the body.

The coat of the Cocker Spaniel is typically fine and short on the head but the hair feathers and is long on the rest of the body. The hairs are soft and silky and may be slightly wavy. Although their coat may look as if it needs a lot of grooming care, it does not. This is a low maintenance dog.

The temperament of the Cocker Spaniel is generally happy. This breed loves people. They are a calm canine that never shows extremes of attitude such as too shy or too aggressive. They have a stable and even-tempered personality.

Usually the avid hunting dog doesn’t make a good indoor pet. They need a lot of room to roam and play. This is not true for the Cocker Spaniel. They make excellent pets and have actually become quite popular in this capacity.
