Jacob’s Ladder

Now, here is one creepy film. Tim Robbins plays the lead role, and he’s quite the tortured soul; not knowing what to believe regarding the events of his life. As the story unfolds, he’s a Vietnam vet back with his family, and dealing with the death of his young son Gabe (played by Macaulay Culkin).

Like any good thriller, things start out simple enough. At first, we think that maybe he’s just suffering some hallucinations from the high fever he has as a result of an illness. But then, the tension level rises. It’s really quite impressive that the filmmakers do not make use of a lot of fancy special effects. Many of the chills are derived from very simple things: light and shadow, under cranking the camera to make things appear to be moving faster, and so on.

As things progress, you start to wonder: what aspects of his world are real, and what aren’t, Is he married to his first wife Sarah (Patricia Kalember) or is he living with his lover Jezebel (Elizabeth Pena), And what is really happening to him, Is he sick with a high fever, insane, or tormented by demons,

Finally, in the end, the story concludes where it started – in Vietnam. It turns out, he is wounded and, as he lay dying, he lives out a series of events from his life; a sort of “last look” at his family and friends, dealing with his personal demons. Finally, Gabe arrives to the dark, bleak apartment Jacob is trapped in, and takes him off to his final reward.
