The Pharaoh Hound is one of the oldest dog breeds in the world. Its heritage dates back to as early as 4000 BC. Although they have been around for a long time, they have not spent much time outside of the island of Malta. This is where they are from and it is rare to have a Pharaoh Hound not living in Malta. In fact, it is the national dog of the Republic of Malta.
Pharaoh Hounds have a very distinctive look. They have strong, lean bodies that stand tall and firm with a short coat of fur. Their ears are very large and stand erect above their heads. They are a large dog breed. Pharaoh Hounds stand between 53 and 64 centimetres tall on average. They do not have a lot of bulk and tend to weigh an average between 18 and 23 kilograms.
The musculature and astute abilities of the Pharaoh Hound make it an excellent hunting dog. It is officially of hound status, which means it is best used for finding and chasing the hunter’s prey. Pharaoh Hounds have a lot of stamina and can run for long periods of time, making them ideal for chasing and catching their prey.
While they are often used for hunting, Pharaoh Hounds also make great companions. They are social and get along not only with humans and children, but they also bond with other dog breeds. They do tend to be wary of strangers, but Pharaoh Hounds will warm up to other people if shown that the stranger is a friend of their owner or the family.
