Pulse, a Stomp Odyssey

If you’ve ever had an interest in music, this film is one you might want to see. It’s an IMAX feature that only runs for about 40 minutes, but those 40 minutes prove to be entertaining to the very last second.

This film comes from the creators of Broadway’s hit show Stomp, and it traces the development of modern music and dance through the ages. It focuses on the music of many cultures and many nations, and it shows how music has affected people far and wide throughout the ages.

Just for the value of some of the great music tracks included in this movie would make it worth seeing, but the fact is that the film provides the viewer with so much more. One can see how music played a role in cultures that existed before the time of Christ, and even in more modern times how different cultures developed the kind of music that would serve their interests the best. We see how music was used as a communication tool, and how it was used to ward off evil spirits, before it’s more modern usage as a viable form of entertainment.

The film shows how music became a form of self-expression – in some cultures the only form of self-expression – and how dance evolved as the logical companion of music throughout the ages.

The film also traces the evolution of rock and roll, and how it evolved over time into other forms of music, including pop and hip hop. It traces the roots of the famous “Motown Sound” and how that music finally gave the black artist the opportunity to cross over into the far more lucrative white man’s world. These film is definitely a crowd-pleaser.
