Swedish Lapphund – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

Sometimes also referred to as the “black beauty of Norrland”, the Swedish Lapphund is a Swedish dog breed, hence the name. There is a lot of speculation when it comes to the Swedish Lapphund’s past. Most historians believe that the dog has lived in Scandinavia since at least 9,000 BC. They are believed to be the oldest dog breed of Sweden. For most of the Swedish Lapphund’s long history, they have worked as guard and hunting dogs for the people of the Sami tribe. The Sami would have large herds of reindeer, and the Swedish Lapphund would help keep the animals safe, as well as the humans. While they were primarily used as a working dog, it is said that the Swedish Lapphund was also commonly used as a companion and pet, especially during the Stone Age. Today, the Swedish Lapphund still has a life as a working dog, in addition to a companion to loving families.

The height of a Swedish Lapphund varies between 43 and 48 centimetres on average. Female dogs of this breed tend to be on the low end of the average height as they are typically smaller than the males. Swedish Lapphunds are of the spitz dog variety. They have a long, curled tail that lies against the dog’s back. They also have a long, straight coat and tall, erect and pointed ears. Swedish Lapphunds are a rare breed and they aren’t usually found outside of Sweden. They make warm and loving family pets.
