‘The Day the Earth Stood Still’: Not Again!

Not another alien movie! Oh yes, another one and its set in Manhattan too! And the aliens want to destroy earth because they think its inhabitants are harming the planet way too much. Like we’ve never seen another movie trying to tell us similar things,

A globe-shaped alien spaceship lands in Central Park (yes, they all start out in New York). Out of the spacecraft comes Klaatu (Keanu Reeves) and his gigantic robotic bodyguard. And if Manhattan is being attacked, can the rest of the world be far behind, Soon other globes start landing across the world. Their mission, Get rid of the humans.

Helen (Jennifer Connelly) is bio-physicist who makes it her own (and the USA’s) mission to stop Klaatu from wiping out the Earth’s inhabitants. Somehow the script also necessitated an 8-year old step son (played by Jaden Smith) but he probably is the movie’s saving grace.

The filmmakers I think had this notion they could transform a 1950s B-grade movie into a 21st century super A-grade movie. Well, they didn’t move up an alphabet but I don’t think it really matters. Despite the lack of plot and the abundance of wooden acting (aka Keanu Reeves), a lot of people seemed to really enjoy the movie. The main reason being, The FX of course! Add lots and lots of special effects to any movie and you’ve got yourself a blockbuster.

In the 1950s the fear was cold war and aliens in general; now it is the fear of what we are doing to our own planet and so the aliens must save Earth. Either way, the movie stays B-grade.
