The Graduate (1967)

Genre: Drama
Director: Mike Nichols
Starring Cast: Anne Bancroft, Dustin Hoffman, Katherine Ross

This iconic movie has numerous famous images and often quoted lines of its script connected with it. Suffice it to say that the most unforgettable is when Mrs Robinson (Bancroft) suggests to Ben Braddock (Hoffman), “Would you like me to seduce you,” having snared him in her bedroom. Fresh college graduate Ben is the son of Mr Robinson’s business associate and family friend, all very convenient, and having reached an uncertain crossroads in his life, he is ripe for the taking by the sexually aware but unfulfilled Mrs Robinson.

The Graduate was a real film of the instant, speaking volumes about the America it depicted, a public doubtful and full of anxiety, rather like Ben, who makes a embarrassed snub to Mrs Robinson’s unashamed offer of sex. It isn’t long however, before her advances are more triumphant and Ben quickly loses his shyness, embarking on a wild affair with this older, married woman. The escapade suddenly ends when Ben is introduced to the Robinson’s beautiful daughter Elaine and decides that she is the girl for him. Already taken, this coming together is just as laden with complications as that with her mother and Ben begins to learn that love is no easy ride. Having started the movie not knowing which course his life was taking, Ben ends with one sure focus; he wants Elaine and he will go to huge lengths to keep her.
