How Addicted Are You,

Deciding how addicted you are to cigarettes is the starting point to deciding what programme is best to help you stop smoking. As with any addiction, nicotine addiction has its various levels.

The first thing to consider is how often you smoke. The more often you smoke, the more addicted you are. Smokers that smoke one or two cigarettes per day are not as addicted as someone who smokes two packs per day. As such, the light smoker can usually quit with a basic programme, where the heavy smoker would need an all-inclusive support scheme.

Next, consider the placement of cigarettes on your budget. When you are preparing a budget, items are listed in order of importance. If cigarettes are placed above necessities such as rent/mortgage, utilities, car payment or insurance, you are very addicted to nicotine.

Think of the things you miss and the opportunities you pass up due to the fear of having to without a cigarette for a while. If you can think of more than a few events you skipped because you did not want to go without a smoke, consider your addiction severe.

Now, think of the things you are willing to do to have a smoke. For example, standing in an ice storm to smoke during a break at work is a good indication that you are severely addicted to nicotine. However, realising that a cigarette is not worth exposing yourself to the wet and the cold would indicate that you are only slightly addicted.
