‘Last Tango in Paris’

‘Last Tango in Paris’ was released in early 1973. The movie stars Marlon Brando as Paul, and Maria Schneider as Jeanne. ‘Last Tango in Paris’ was nominated for two Academy Awards in 1974. One nomination was for Marlon Brando as Best Actor, and another for Bernardo Bertolucci as Best Director.

When the movie was initially released it was classified as X-rated. It was not until several years later that it was given the NC-17 rating that it carries today. Shortly after the film was released onto video, many of the scenes that earned it the original X-rating were cut out. This allowed the film to be marketed as R-rated.

The film starts off with Paul, who is grieving the loss of his wife. While looking for a new home he sees Jeanne, and the two make love without exchanging a single word. This encounter serves as the foundation of the movie. Over time the two develop a passionate relationship that yields plenty of graphic sex scenes throughout the movie.

What makes the movie particularly intriguing is that Paul and Jeanne know so little about each other. They decide early on to keep it simple and almost totally sexual.

The movie’s ending will come as a surprise to many people who watch it. It is likely that you will either love the movie or hate the movie. Director Bernardo Bertolucci does an excellent job creating a passionate movie that certainly captures one’s attention.
