Ten Most Expensive Films Ever Made

10. ‘Superman Returns’
Bryan Singer sure likes directing superhero movies and when you have $204million to play with, who wouldn’t, Superman soars in this live action, modern-day take on the original.

9. ‘King Kong’
How much does it cost to make a really big monkey, $207million apparently. Well, you have to figure he does do a lot of damage and all those shots have to be designed by a team of special effects artists, so it is quite challenging. Well worth the money.

8. ‘Spiderman 2’
No list would be complete without at least one superhero movie and after the success of the first film, I’m sure the cast was asking for more money. So what makes a good sequel, For starters it has to be better than the first. How do you do that, Spend a whole lot of money on neat special effects and hire the best stuntmen in the business.

7. ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’
For some reason director, Brett Ratner, was allowed to spend a lot more money on this third film than the first two, which were directed by Bryan Singer. What did he get for his money, Lots of really cool special effects.

6. ‘Terminator 3: Rise of the Machine’
Arnold returned and brought with him a big bill, to the tune of $219million. Why so much you ask, Well there were all those explosions, destroyed objects and oh yeah, one big pay check for the big man. Hey, it wouldn’t have been the same without him.

5. ‘Waterworld’
Kevin Costner’s epic movie about the struggles of a world that lives entirely on the water was a unique vision that, while intriguing, was entirely too long. What was also too long was the bill; at $229million it was one costly movie.

4. ‘Titantic’
This ship almost sank several times during filming, because of the outrageous budget that just seemed to rise daily. There were the unforeseen costs of maintaining the set, the usual movie problems and of course, leaks. At $247million it was a pricey venture, but it sure did pay off.

3. ‘Spiderman 3’
At $258million, the third instalment of the comic book film makes it the third most expensive movie ever made. Blame that on the amazing special effects and incredible sound. Was it worth it, You be the judge.

2. ‘Cleopatra’
Elizabeth Taylor should be proud, this film starring her as Cleopatra managed to become the second most expensive film produced in history. Made in 1963 for $44million, today it would cost $295million. With an original budget of just $2million, this film almost bankrupted 20th Century Fox.

1. ‘War and Peace’
An eight-hour film, there you have it. Released in four parts, beginning in 1968, this movie was made for $100million. In today’s currency that would equate to over $500million, making it by far the most expensive movie ever made.
