Vizsla – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

The Vizsla dog breed is from Hungary and goes by several other names. They can be called the Hungarian Vizsla, the Magyar Vizsla, or the Hungarian Pointer. Vizsla dogs are very popular as a sporting breed. In fact, they are one of the smallest dog breeds that specialize in pointing and retrieving during a hunting expedition. Besides being a good hunter, the Vizsla is also a good companion dog as they are very friendly and loving, and they make excellent family pets.

Vizslas serve two functions when they are on the hunt. First, they point out the prey to the hunter. By using both sight and sound, they can find animals much easier than humans can. When they do, they straighten out their body and point their head toward the animal. This gives the hunter an idea of wear to point his gun. The Vizsla is also a retriever. Once the hunter has killed his prey, the Vizsla will then run out and retrieve the felled animal, careful not to damage it while holding it in its teeth. Both of these tasks are very helpful to hunters.

The Vizsla has a short coat that lays flat against its skin. Most Vizslas have a golden-rust coloured coat in different shades, although this can vary. Some can be a sandy or brown colour, and some can be red or yellow. Average Vizslas are between 53 and 63 centimetres tall. They average a weight of between 18 and 30 kilograms.
